Japanilaiset ristikot laboratory: teaching mathematics in Finland with Japanese puzzles

Schools in Finland have a national part of the curriculum which covers most of the studies all students must have in order to graduate high school. Yet, there are also optional studies In Finland. We have nationally agreed for what we call "special advanced studies" in all the common subjects and schools are allowed to develop their own special courses for that matter. Thus, for two years in a row I have had the wonderful opportunity to include a course about Japanese puzzles to my teaching schedule at Turun iltalukio, night gymnasium for adults in Turku, Finland.

I have always thought that Japanese puzzles are the best possible option when trying to learn logical thinking and Ms. Vihervaara, the principal of Turun iltalukio, knows about my hobby solving them. She is very eager to develop our school and gave permission to try if this course would attract students. Since I am a mathematics teacher and all the courses should fit under some suitable school subject, I chose the course to be an advanced course in mathematics, the shorter syllabus.

My students are adults aged 18 to any age. Therefore my teaching differed very much from the experiments of teachers with young children. Most of mine had already tried Sudoku’s and could solve them. Some solved just easier puzzles, some wanted more advanced ones and some of them were already a bit bored of Sudoku’s. What a suitable group to get them introduced to other puzzles, especially the picture logic ones.

maths drill

A List of Web Pages with Printable Files .

Easy Drill Sheets

These sheets are for the younger crowd and those children who are new to drill sheets. These sheets are far less intimating because there are only 18 questions per sheet. The name of the sheets tells what numbers are used.

Regular Drill Sheets

The drill sheets below are for the children who are 4/5 grade and up and have used drill sheets before. If the drill sheets below take way too much time (more than 8-10 minutes to begin with) or if they put off your child, then start your child on the easy drill sheets.
*You'll know that your child has mastered these drills when they can do them in less than 3 minutes.
*The answer sheets can be also used as study sheets.
*Until they learn the multiplication facts, let your kids look at a multiplication chart while they do math. It will take some of the their frustration away while they do their math lessons. They will use the chart less over time and eventually they will not need it at all.

Kidzone fun facts for kids

Free Printable Math Worksheets

Kidzone.ws and related sites, such as first-school.ws and coloring.ws are invaluable resources for homeschooling and afterschooling families. These sites are packed with coloring pages, free printable math worksheets, tracing pages, information, crafts projects, scissor skills, etc. Topics are wide-ranging. They include animals, seasons, music, countries, math, and more.

I especially like first-school.ws and its preschool themes. As an example, if you want to teach your child about frogs, you can go to the Animals theme
. Then choose frogs from the list. This brings up tracing pages, lesson plans, crafts, coloring pages, online stories and activities. Kidzone.ws also has a frog section that includes the Life Cycle of the frog and a body parts page. You can also do comparisons. For example, you can compare the metamorphosis and life cycle of the frog to that of the butterfly.

With my daughter, I choose a theme and then go through the various coloring pages,
free printable math worksheets, crafts, etc. I print out everything I want to do for that lesson. These sites have so many resources that you will need to plan what you want to use in advance. After my daughter has completed all of the activities, I staple the pages together and put them into a folder. We can then pull out the folder from time-to-time to look over what she has done and review what she has learned.

If you are teaching your child to write, you will love the tracing section
. A nice feature here is that you can make your own tracing pages. So, you can make tracing pages with your child's name. Or if you want to introduce easier letters first, such as E, F, L, T, V, W, X, Z, you can customize the tracing sheets to suit your needs.

These sites are great. Don't homeschool or afterschool without them.
